You know that you’re going to love your new town after you move, but what about the family pet? Is the city you’re moving to Fido-friendly? People in cities all over the U.S. have dogs and cats, but a few cities make themselves a little more accommodating to their furry residents that others do. Let’s take a look at the top 5 U.S. cities that love their pets.

  1. Portland, Oregon. You might not find a better city as a home for you and your pet than Portland, Oregon. Portland has over 33 dog parks in city limits—that’s more dog parks per capita than any other city in the U.S. Portland pubs are also very pet-friendly, and commonly allow owners to bring their dogs inside. The city’s riverfront is a great place to take your dog for a relaxing afternoon. The Grotto, a botanical garden and Catholic shrine, holds a Blessing of the Animals ceremony on the third Sunday of each June. When you’re done strolling around this very walkable town with your dog, login to the city’s own social network for pet lovers, pdxdog.com.
  2. Seattle, Washington. Just north of the Rose City of Portland is Seattle, Washington, home to 11 off-leash dog parks. Just recently, the number of dogs in the city has exceeded the number of children in the city. Dogs are welcome on the city’s public transportation system, including buses, ferries, and light rail. Take a ride with your pet to a doga session (that’s yoga with dogs) or stop into one of the city’s 150 pet-friendly restaurants. Just in town for a visit? Be sure to look into one of Seattle’s many pet-friendly hotels.
  3. San Diego, California. Both you and your pooch will enjoy the wonderful weather of this Southern California city. The city boasts 16 off-leash dog parks and welcomes mutts at many of its beaches, hiking trails, and other parks. The city also has a community dedicated to advocating for dog-friendly ordinances. And, for those times when “mom and dad” would like to have a night to themselves, they can call one of the city’s many qualified dog sitters.
  4. San Francisco, California. Ranked consistently as one of the most walkable cities in the country, San Francisco is a great place to spend some quality time with your pet. The city has over 27 dog parks and even allows dogs on its famous trolley cars. San Francisco also has many dog-friendly establishments such as restaurants, pubs, and even gyms. Dogs are permitted on the city’s ferry lines, too.
  5. Austin, TX. This Texas college town is gaining in popularity for both humans and dogs alike. The number of off-leash dog parks has grown to 18, and leashed dogs are welcome in many other places. If you are planning on moving to Austin, take your leashed dog on one of the city’s guided walking tours for a great way to get you and your pet acquainted with the town.
