Hiring the right moving company is a wise investment. Not only will you literally leave all of the heavy lifting to someone else on moving day, you can rest assured that your possessions will make it their new home undamaged. There are so many moving companies to choose from that it might seem as if you may as well pick one at random. This is a mistake! There are good moving companies and there are great moving companies that will go above and beyond to make sure you get the best service possible. Here are a few tips for finding one of the great ones.

Hiring Perfect Mover

Do your research. Ask around for recommendations for moving companies from friends, family and co-workers. Don’t know anybody who has moved recently? Mine your social media for Facebook friends that maybe you don’t keep in touch with but who would still be able to give you a recommendation for a mover. Online review websites like Yelp are also great sources of information.

Get estimates. Many moving companies will give you an initial estimate based on the details you provide them and then provide you with a more thorough estimate once they have looked into your home, your furniture, and your destination. Get estimates from three or four companies and then determine which companies might be best to do the more thorough estimate. Oftentimes moving companies will try to outbid each other if presented with legitimate estimates from other companies, so use this in your favor. Just be sure you’re not sacrificing professionalism and safety for a rock bottom price.

Thoroughly review the estimates. Once you have the estimates in writing, be sure they cover everything you need the moving company to do for you. Make sure the final estimate is a written binding estimate before signing it. Once you do sign it, the estimate becomes a contract between you and the moving company locking in the price and services described therein. Be sure that you are aware of any additional costs that might be incurred for additional services.

Consider insurance options. Your mover is required to carry a certain amount of insurance to protect your belongings. However, if you think that you will require additional insurance, be sure to incorporate this into the estimates from the moving companies.

Do a deep background check on your final candidates. Once you have pared down your list of potential movers to just a handful, it’s time to dig into the details for each company. Locate the USDOT number for each moving company that you are considering. Go to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website at safersys.org and enter the number. Here, you should be able to find out all sorts of information on the company such as the amount of insurance they carry, what they are authorized to haul, and their safety record.

Choose a mover. Pick the mover that you are most comfortable with and confirm the date and details with the moving company.
