Are you running out of room in your current home? The first step to creating more space is to do a comprehensive purge of everything that you no longer need, shopping it away on Craigslist or just having an old fashioned garage sale. If you’re still left with a pile of stuff that you legitimately need but maybe not at this very moment, it’s time to look into storage facilities near your home. What should you look for when shopping for a storage facility? These tips might help you on your search.

  1. Are there minimum storage requirements? Some storage facilities have a minimum storage requirement in order to keep their storage units occupied. This is no problem if you’re a business that needs to store tons of old files and records or unused inventory. If you’re just an individual who needs to stash away some winter sports equipment and holiday decorations, this could be a problem for you. Ask the storage facility if they have any minimum storage requirements so that you’re not renting a storage unit that is much larger than you need.
  2. Do you have to sign a long-term contract? If you’re planning on keeping the storage facility for a while, it might not be a big deal to sign a year-long contract. But for short-term storage rental needs for, say, de-cluttering a home to stage it for selling, you might not need storage for a year. Be sure to check with the storage facility to see if they have any term requirements to make sure the contract length matches with your needs.
  3. How do I access my stuff? Many storage facilities have an access gate that allows anybody who has the code access to all of the locked storage facilities. While this might be convenient for easy access, it also leaves some storage units vulnerable. If this is worrisome to you, look for a storage facility that keeps everything under lock and key, only allowing staff members access to customers’ belongings, and bringing them to the renter when they need them.
  4. Do you need climate-controlled storage? If you need to store documents and pictures in your storage unit, make sure that you find a storage facility that offers climate controlled storage. This type of facility will provide the right conditions for files, books, and photo albums, protecting them from mold and moisture.
  5. Do you need delivery services in conjunction with your storage? Finding the right storage facility that fits your needs is great, but it’s even better if you can find one that will come to your home and take your items away to storage for you. This option is especially convenient when getting ready to move. You can store away things as you have them packed, and call the storage to come pick them up when you’re ready to go. On moving day, all you have to do is call the storage company to coordinate your move to your new home.
