Moving can be a very exciting opportunity as much as it can be a very stressful experience. While you might be excited to move to a new home, start a new job, or open a new chapter in your life, you still need to deal with the actual move. There is much to do to get yourself ready for a move, but as long as you do the right things in the right order, you’ll have nothing to worry about. Before you move, take a look at the tasks on this to-do list to keep yourself organized throughout the process.

Two months before the move:

Begin the great purge. You don’t want to take things that you won’t need, so sort through things like clothes, dishes, books and other items that you might be willing to part with. Donate items that are still in good condition to Goodwill, and resolve to throw the rest in the trash. You’ll feel better about getting rid of so much clutter.

Start to research moving companies. Take a break from throwing out old junk and start to research moving companies for your move. If you wait too long, the best moving companies might be booked up and you’ll be stuck with whoever you can find. Get a quote in writing that provides specific details about your move.

Six weeks before the move:

Order moving supplies. Get your boxes and tape before you begin packing so you can order more if you need to. It’s better to find out you’re short a couple of wardrobe boxes a few weeks before the move than the day before.

Start using up consumables in the house. If you have a considerable amount of food in the freezer, plan out meals for the next few weeks to ensure that you will use it all up before you move. In the weeks just before the move, clean out the fridge and find friends who are in need of ketchup and mustard and donate your condiments to them.

Change address, utilities, etc. It doesn’t hurt to get a jump on the change of address form at the post office and order your new utilities for the new home. If you have children, contact their new school and ask about what kind of records they will need before your kids can enroll.

Four weeks before the move:

Start packing. Give yourself enough time to begin packing, as it always takes longer than you think it will. Start with the fragile items like the fine china, so you can take your time and make sure they are safely packed. Label each box with the room in the new home that it is destined for.

Two weeks before the move:

Confirm details with the mover. Call up the moving company and make sure they have all the correct details about the moving date and other specifics for your move. You can also arrange for payment if you haven’t already.
